When Sam heard the door close, her eyes popped open. She’d pretended to sleep in hopes that Abby would leave because she didn’t think she could have laid there any longer with Abby so close. She wanted to reach out and touch Abby’s beautiful face. She’d had an overwhelming desire to kiss her. Sam dragged herself from the bed in time to see Abby cross the parking lot. She could look at her forever. There was no longer a question that this was the worst infatuation she’d ever experienced. She’d feared Abby staying, but that’s what she really wanted. There was sadness in Abby’s eyes today that she hadn’t noticed before. Abby smiled and tried to make her laugh, but it was there. Sam wanted to make her eyes shine the way she knew they did when Abby was happy. She wrapped her arms around herself against a chill. The pressure stirred the sensation when Abby’s fingers had brushed under Sam’s breast. She shivered…a wonderful kind of shiver.

As Abby pulled away, Sam wondered how Abby had found out she was home sick. She was an angel disguised as an average woman, although Sam sensed she was anything but average. She picked up the empty glasses from the nightstand and headed to the kitchen for something to cool her burning insides. The neatly stacked magazines on the coffee table didn’t escape notice. She also caught the faint scent of Abby’s perfume. Dropping onto the old sagging couch, she pressed a throw pillow hard into her lap. She wanted Abby “that way,” too much for her own good. She and Abby were developing a friendship unlike any Sam had ever had. It was comfortable and easy to be around her, and they could talk about nearly everything. Sam was not about to jeopardize that. She’d keep her distance except for coffee at the hospital. Well, maybe an occasional dinner, but she couldn’t drag Abby off to her parents anymore because seeing Abby getting along like old friends with her momma and papa just made Sam want her all the more. She closed her eyes at the sadness that settled in her heart.
